Congratulation to Officer Cesar Nunez and Dispatcher Mariela Avila who were recognized at a recent City of Irwindale Council Meeting for their life-saving efforts during a medical aid call earlier this year.
On March 9th at about 9PM, Dispatcher Avila received a 9-1-1 call in our Communications Center of a female resident suffering a dangerous medical emergency. Dispatcher Avila calmed and comforted the caller while she obtained the information necessary to dispatch police and medical personnel to the scene. She remained on the line with the caller and her family while assistance was on the way.
Officer Nunez arrived at the residence within 90 seconds of receiving the radio call and immediately began life-saving measures on the female victim to control her bleeding, including the application of a tourniquet. Officer Nunez continued to provide critical first aid until paramedics from the Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived.
The female was ultimately taken to a local hospital, where she survived and recovered from the incident, thanks in part to the quick and coordinated life-saving efforts of Officer Nunez and Dispatcher Avila.
Both employees were recognized by Chief Ty Henshaw, Mayor Larry G. Burrola and a representative from the Office of Senator Susan Rubio. The victim’s daughter also took the dais to offer a heartfelt thank you to Officer Nunez and Dispatcher Avila for their calm composure and quick actions that resulted in saving her mother’s life.
We are honored and humbled to have these two heroes in our midst and we congratulation them both for going above and beyond the call of duty!
