1. Where can I go to obtain a Building, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and/or Sewer Permit?

Please visit the Building & Safety Division at 16102 Arrow Hwy., Irwindale, CA 91706 Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. We are closed every Friday and for lunch between 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

3. Do I need a permit if I am building a fence or brick wall?

No permit is required with Building & Safety if the fence or brick wall is less than 6 feet in height and not a retaining wall; however, the planning department will still need to review and approve fences or brick walls no matter the size. A permit is required for retaining walls that retain over 4 feet in height measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall unless supporting a surcharge or impounding a Class I, II, or III-A liquids.

4. Do I need a permit if I am replacing my water heater and/or air conditioning unit/furnace?

Yes, an over-the-counter plumbing or mechanical permit is required when you replace your water heater and/or air conditioning unit/furnace. Our inspector ensures the appliances are installed properly to code.

5. Do I need a permit if I am replacing my windows and/or my roof?

Yes, a building permit is required.
